Emerging Writers Workshop
New to writing but want to give it a shot? Attended the Lecture Series in 2025 but it wasn't enough? Maybe you should try the Emerging Writers Workshop.
Attendees workshop all morning with Stony Brook faculty member and managing editor of The Southampton Review, Bobby Crace, plus have access to all afternoon programming, salons, evening readings and social gatherings throughout the five days.
Designed for local emerging writers (20+) and at levels, this workshop offers a supportive space to generate new work, rethink revision, and develop habits that sustain long-term writing lives. The purpose of this course is to first establish confidence when drafting and sharing ideas. We will then learn to curate our own feedback and develop creative community. During workshop discussions, we will explore revision tactics that encourage creative exploration rather than reductive ‘fixing.’ We will also cover submission and publishing strategies we can pursue when our work feels ready to submit.
Learning Outcomes:
- Establish drafting, revision, and submission processes for emerging writers
- Practice generative exercises
- Develop revision strategies. Revision doesn’t have to be this ominous endeavor rooted in correction. We can treat revision more like creative exploration to discover new story combinations.
- Learn how to curate feedback and develop our own reading groups
- Introduce tactics for submitting queries, book proposals, and cover letters to literary journals and agents.
