A dazzling feat of narrative sleight-of hand, Memento runs its film-noir revenge plot in reverse. Guy Pierce plays an insurance investigator affected with short-term amnesia, trying to track down his wife’s murderer with the help of a sheaf of Polaroids, a chest full of tattoos and a couple of shady characters (Joe Pantoliano and Carrie-Anne Moss). The movie is challenging and suspenseful and a triumph of directorial style. Adapting his brother’s short story, Nolan, along with a brilliant cast, has made the most ticklish and energized movie of the year.
