Written and directed by Mike Leigh. This Academy Award winning, grandly entertaining film is a mix of erudition, pageantry and delectable acting. It presents the curiously matched personalities of the librettist William Gilbert and the composer Arthur Sullivan in the midst of a robust and frequently hilarious look at the musical theatre over which they held sway. After their newest operetta, “Princess Ida” turns out to be a dud, these established hit-makers have to reinvent themselves. The turn around begins at a London exhibition on Japanese culture to which Gilbert’s wife drags him. Somewhere in the midst of the kimonos and Kabuki, inspiration strikes and “The Mikado” is born. As the operetta takes shape, the film offers exultant excerpts performed by actors who make it a palpable triumph. A USA Films release.
