Chinese Challenge Exams allow eligible students to take an exam to earn credit for select Chinese language courses and to satisfy the corresponding SBCs. To simply satisfy the LANG SBC or to determine which CHI class level is appropriate for you, please register to take the Chinese Foreign Language Placement Exam (FLPE).
Chinese Challenge Exam
The remote-proctored, online Chinese challenge exam is offered 4 times per year. Each
of the 4 exam sessions are 3-6 weeks in duration. The exam cost is $77/credit.

Please carefully review the guidelines to confirm your eligibility.
If eligible, students can challenge the following courses:
- CHI 112 (4 credits, LANG)
- CHI 211 (3 credits, LANG, GLO)
- CHI 212 (3 credits, GLO, HUM, LANG)
- CHI 311 (3 credits, LANG, HFA+)
- CHI 312 (3 credits, HFA+, SPK, LANG)
- Students who have already taken a Chinese challenge exam should contact the LLRC at llrc@stonybrook.edu BEFORE registering for another exam.
- Students who scored a Level 5 on Stony Brook University’s Foreign Language Placement Exam (FLPE) are only eligible to challenge CHI 311 and 312.
- Students who have taken a 400-level CHI course are ineligible to take a CHI challenge exam, unless the course they took is one or more of the following: CHI 447/475/476/487/488.

(2) Make a payment online through Solar in the "What do I Owe" Section -- There is no bill, so pay the exact amount ($77 per credit for transcript credits). Please follow this navigation: SOLAR>Campus Financial Services> Account Information/Payment) >What Do I Owe? From this page scroll down to 'Pay Tuition & Fees' and follow the steps to make a payment. Again, you will not receive a bill, so make the exact payment.
(3) After making payment, send the completed form as an attachment (pdf) in an email to the Bursar with a copy to the LLRC. Please use both of these 2 email addresses:
(4) The Bursar will confirm with the LLRC that you have paid the correct amount. After the LLRC has received payment confirmation you will be added to the list of registered students and receive an email on or about the start date of the exam session with testing details. After the exam, the LLRC will report the results to the Registrar who will upload them to your transcript.
